Microsoft Reports Q3 Profit of $5.23 Billion

Microsoft Corp. announced Q3 revenue of $16.43 billion for its quarter ended Mar. 31, 2011, a 13% increase from the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.71 billion, $5.23 billion, and $0.61 per share, which represented increases of 10%, 31%, and 36%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period.
One of the highlights of Microsoft's Q3 report was the 60% growth year-over-year in its Entertainment & Devices Division, which was fueled by strong Xbox 360 and Kinect sales.
Bloomberg says Microsoft shares slipped in late trading after the software maker's Windows unit's revenues generated $4.45 billion, which was short of the $4.6 billion analysts expected.
Apple fanboys are crowing that Apple generated more net income last quarter than Microsoft - $5.99 billion to $5.23 billion.
