Bill Gates Departure From Microsoft Will Leave a Void
Posted on June 21, 2006
By now everyone has heard the Bill Gates has set his departure from Microsoft in motion. Gates will leave Microsoft for good in July, 2008. Meanwhile, Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie have already been given new titles. Ozzie is Chief Technical Officer and Mundie is Chief Research and Strategy Officer.
CNET says, "Bill Gates leaves some pretty big shoes to fill. Think of Ray Ozzie as the left shoe and Craig Mundie as the right one."
OSNews thinks CEO Steve Ballmer should leave as well. However, Ballmer doesn't think that is necessary as he explained in a recent Q&A. Ballmer says, "You've got the two biggest shareholders -- we don't own 50 percent of the company -- but you've got the two biggest shareholders in the room. And with everything we know about the company, two things are true. No. 1, we're steering the investments that the company is making, that people maybe were reacting to. And No. 2, we've been part of a board of directors that has put the company on a path to buy back stock."
Bill Gates seems very young for retirement. He could still run Microsoft for years if he wanted. It will be different without him at the helm of the software giant.
