AFFECT Launches Fairterms Website
Posted on March 15, 2005
AFFECT, the Americans for Fair Electronic Commerce Transaction, has launched Fairterms, a website that aims to inform web users about the digital terms they agree to when they download software or click an online agreement. These terms - which few people are likely to read - are often known as shrink-wrap or sneak-wrap.
AFFECT says the agreements sometimes contain "unexpected and often unfair digital product terms." The website currently offers information, ways to take action and promises an upcoming weblog. Fairterms is part of AFFECT's Stop Before You Click campaign.
AFFECT President Miriam Nisbet says in a statement, "The new logo says it well. Stop Before You Click and then take the next step, 'Insist on fair digital product terms.' The Principles offer consumers of all types a tool to evaluate the licenses they confront everyday. We encourage business purchasers and vendors to incorporate the principles into their contracting practices. Ultimately, we offer the principles to legislators to use in drafting more balanced legislation."
Update: The Fairterms site is no longer available.
